How do you talk to your teachers / friends about periods?

Periods & hormones

Hey hey, thanks for asking luna 💛

It can be really hard to talk about periods, especially because in the past they have been such a taboo. But times are changing and the more we talk about it the easier it gets for everyone!

Remember, periods are a normal part of life and there's nothing to be ashamed of!

A lot of HOW you talk about periods depends on the context.

For example, with a friend it can be quiet casual and even more emotional. A true friend will want to support your emotions! For example, "urgh I'm super hormonal today sorry I might be a bit more emotional than usual" or "I'm feeling a bit self conscious about leaking today could you keep an eye out for me as well now and again?"

With teachers, this is a bit more of a formal setting, so it may be about making your needs rather than your feelings the key focus of the conversation.

You don't have to go into loads of detail, but you could say things like "Really sorry to do this but I'm on my period right now and I need to pop out mid lesson to change my pad – is this okay?", or "I'm really struggling today with my energy as I'm on my period can I keep a snack at my desk in case I need it to help me focus?"

In general though, just know that there's no shame in talking about periods it's just about pushing past that initial voice in your head that may be making you feel embarrassment, shame or fear. If you need to ask for support, ask for it. The people around you should understand.

Really hope this helps – and good luck 🍀
