Periods & hormones

Heyy, thanks for trusting luna ❤️

Don't worry, accidents happen to the best of us! If your period leaks on your school chair, try to stay calm. Check if your school has spare clothing or sanitary supplies available in case of emergencies.

If not, ask a trusted friend if they have any supplies to lend you. Having an emergency period pack in your bag is a good idea too (more on this below).

Wrap a jacket or sweater around your waist to cover any stains and discreetly make your way to the toilets. Use water or wet wipes to clean the stain as best as you can - there's more about dealing with period stains in the app as well.

If you're worried about leaks because of heavy periods, here are a couple of top tips you could try:

  • Try using panty liners: Panty liners are thin, small pads that are more discrete than period pads. They usually aren't thick enough to absorb too much blood but if you're worried about being caught out, then you could easily wear one a day until your period comes. Once the period does come, then you would switch to a thicker pad or tampon to absorb more blood
  • Double up and wear period pants: If you're feeling nervous about leaking, then once your period comes, doubling up with some period pants as well as pads/tampons will prevent any leaks as they are lined with material to soak blood - they are super comfy and great for the environment (luna has lots of info on this in the learn section of the app as well)
  • Carry spare knickers: If you do leak, then having a spare of pants in your period kit can be super handy to quickly switch into!
  • Don't worry or panic: If you do leak, know that it's ok! Head to your school nurse who will have supplies and who will be able to help you

Lastly, if you have any concerns in regards to your periods being too heavy or if the way you are experiencing your period has an influence on your daily activities, then you should make an appointment with your GP as there may be some treatment to lessen the flow.

We really hope these tips lessen your worries, thanks again for asking this 🫶
