What does dark red period blood mean?
Answering the question"why is my period blood brown" 🤎

Quick summary 📝
1️⃣ Period blood isn’t always bright red – it can be dark red or brown, especially at the start and end of your period 🤎
2️⃣ Brown discharge before your first period is usually normal – but if it smells bad, looks unusual, or is associated with pain, it may be a sign of infection
3️⃣ If something feels off, see a doctor – healthcare providers deal with this all the time, and getting checked is nothing to be ashamed of 💙

When we think of period blood colour, we picture bright red, but that’s not always the case!
Many people notice dark red or brown period blood – this is completely normal.
Why does period blood turn brown?
👉 Brighter red blood is more common when your period is at its heaviest (day 2-3)
👉 Brown period blood is usually seen at the start and end of your period
👉 This happens because blood takes longer to leave the body, so it oxidises (reacts with oxygen) and turns brown 🤎
Is brown period blood normal?
Yes!
Brown, dark red, or rusty-coloured period blood is very common and nothing to worry about.
Brown discharge before your first period is also usually normal.
What’s NOT normal?
If your discharge has any of the following, it may signal an infection:
👉 Smell: discharge shouldn’t have a strong or bad smell
👉 Colour: it shouldn’t be grey, green, or blood-tinged (unless on your period)
👉 Consistency: normal discharge varies, but shouldn’t be clumpy or foamy
👉 Pain: you shouldn’t feel pain, discomfort, or burning when weeing
👉 Other symptoms: itching, redness, or swelling around the vagina isn’t normal
When to see a doctor
If you have dark red or brown blood but are otherwise feeling as you normally do on your period, this isn’t anything to worry about.
However, if you notice a change in discharge alongside any of the symptoms listed above, it’s important to see a doctor 🩺
This could be a sign of an infection or something that needs treatment.
There’s nothing to be embarrassed about – healthcare providers see this all the time and it’s just routine for them 💙
