How to help my teen cope with mock exam stress?
Mock exams can feel intense for teens, but your support can make a big difference. Creating a calm home environment, listening without pressure, and helping them keep things in perspective can all reduce exam stress and make the experience feel more manageable.
Mock exams don’t just affect teens - they can impact the whole household, and parents can sometimes feel as overwhelmed as their teen! But you can ease your teens' worries and, in turn, ease the stress in the home.
From what we’ve learnt from teens, communication is key – in a luna poll, nearly 1 in 5 teens said that feeling listened to and understood by parents helps them manage stress during exams.

How to support teens with mock exams
Supporting your teen during mocks is about balance - helping them stay organised while also protecting their wellbeing. Feeling listened to and supported can reduce stress more than pressure ever will.
To help your teen with mock exams, you can:
- Keep communication open: ask gentle, open-ended questions like “what’s stressing you most right now?” and really listen to the answer
- Create simple routines: plan study time, breaks, and fun things to do so their days feel predictable and balanced
- Maintain normal family time: shared meals or small daily rituals can help everything feel more stable
- Focus on progress, not perfection: remind them that mocks are a learning experience, not a final judgement
It is also helpful to watch out for signs that your teen is revising too much and getting overwhelmed.

How to reduce stress and anxiety during exams in teens
Supporting your teen’s basic wellbeing, like sleep, food, and downtime, can have a big impact on helping your teen manage stress and anxiety. If your teen is busy revising, focusing on the home environment can help.
1 in 7 teens told luna that having a calm and supportive home environment reduced their stress significantly – so even simple gestures like making a favourite snack or cup of tea while they revise, or taking a short walk together, can help reset the atmosphere.
You could support your teen by:
- Prioritising sleep: encourage a consistent bedtime so they’re well-rested and able to concentrate
- Keeping meals regular: nutritious snacks and healthy eating help maintain energy and focus
- Encouraging breaks: short breaks, fresh air, or a quick walk can help reset their mind
- Normalising how they’re feeling: remind them that stress is a common part of exams and doesn’t mean they’re not coping
An exam survival kit may also be a great mood-boosting gift for your teen during mock exam season.
How to deal with teen mock exam stress the night before
The night before mocks should be about winding down, not cramming. Helping your teen relax and feel prepared can improve both their sleep and performance.
Your teen may be tempted to stay up late to revise, but this may actually hurt their chances of success.
Instead, focus on relaxation the night before an exam by:
- Encouraging them to stop studying early: a cut-off point in the evening helps their brain rest
- Keeping the evening calm: avoid last-minute pressure or big conversations about results
- Helping them prepare practically: pack their bag, organise materials, and plan the morning to reduce stress
- Suggesting a wind-down routine: a shower, music, or a familiar routine can help them relax
- Offering reassurance: a simple “you’ve done enough” can go a long way
What to remember when your teen has mock exams
Mock exams can feel overwhelming, but they’re just one step in your teen’s journey - not the final outcome. With a calm, supportive approach and a focus on balance, you can help them manage stress and build confidence along the way.
If your teen needs extra support, introduce them to luna - a space designed to help young people navigate exam stress, build confidence, and feel supported during moments like this.
