Understanding Roblox and setting healthy boundaries

Quick summary
- Roblox can be fun and creative, but it comes with risks like chatting with strangers, in-game purchases, and exposure to inappropriate content
- Parents can use Roblox’s safety settings – like parental controls and chat filters – to reduce risks
- Open communication and clear boundaries can help your teen enjoy Roblox responsibly

If you’re a parent of a teen or tween, you’ve probably heard about Roblox.
In fact, that’s probably why you’re here – they’re either using it, or asking about using it.
With over 200 million monthly users, Roblox is one of the most popular apps for teens and kids.
But you might be here because you’re wondering: is it safe?
The answer is: it can be, if you understand the risks and set up the right safeguards.
That’s why we’re here to take you through it!
What is Roblox, and why do teens love it?
Roblox isn’t a single game. It’s a platform where users can create and play millions of different games.
Teens love it because it’s social, creative, and constantly changing.
In Roblox, your teen can:
- Play with friends or join games made by other players
- Build their own games, characters, and worlds
- Chat and collaborate in real-time
This mix of social interaction and creativity is what makes Roblox so engaging and exciting.
But it’s also what can make it risky.
What are the risks of Roblox?
While Roblox itself isn’t “bad,” it has some areas where parents need to stay alert:
- Chats with strangers: teens can connect with people they don’t know – while chat filters help, inappropriate content can still slip through the nets
- In-game purchases: Robux (the in-game currency) can add up quickly – especially if your teen clicks “buy” without realising the real-world cost
- Inappropriate content: Roblox has moderation in place, but user-created games can sometimes include violent, scary, or mature themes
- Screen time balance: like any online game, Roblox can become addictive and cause concerns surrounding teen phone addiction
Roblox parental controls every parent should know
If your teen has a Roblox account, you can set a parental account linked to your teen's account.
This will allow you to keep an eye on what your teen is up to and use the parental controls.
Roblox offers several tools to help you protect your teen:
- Chat restrictions: you can limit or disable chat altogether
- Content filters: Roblox automatically filters inappropriate words and phrases, but you can add extra restrictions based on what you know of your teen and their stage in life and learning
- Content maturity: you can set a rating on the content your teen can access
- Spend controls: set limits on how much Robux your teen can purchase or spend
- Blocking experience: you can block certain experiences on Roblox, regardless of their maturity rating
- Screen time: sets a timer on how long your child can spend on Roblox in a day
What are the content maturity ratings on Roblox?
As there are loads of games on Roblox, there is no one maturity rating for the whole platform.
This does make it a little bit tricky to stay in control of what your teen is looking at.
However, Roblox has maturity ratings you can put in place to help your teen avoid upsetting or inappropriate content.
According to the Roblox guide, these content ratings are exactly as follows:
- Minimal: may contain occasional mild violence, light unrealistic blood, and/or occasional mild fear
- Mild: may contain repeated mild violence, heavy unrealistic blood, mild crude humor, and/or repeated mild fear
- Moderate: may contain moderate violence, light realistic blood, moderate crude humor, unplayable gambling content, and/or moderate fear
- Restricted: may contain strong violence, heavy realistic blood, moderate crude humor, romantic themes, unplayable gambling content, the presence of alcohol, strong language, and/or moderate fear – restricted content is only for users who are 17+ age-verified
Talking to strangers on Roblox
The social side of Roblox is part of what makes it fun, but it also opens the door to risks.
Teens may chat with strangers and make friends online with people who aren’t always who they say they are.
Here’s how to handle it:
- Turn off or limit chat: Roblox does restrict certain chat features for under 13s, but you may want to consider disabling chat altogether
- Teach safe sharing rules: remind your teen never to share personal details like their real name, age, school, or location
- Roleplay awareness: many Roblox games involve roleplay so try to encourage your teen to separate game-play “characters” from real-life sharing
- Check in regularly: ask who they’re playing with – a casual “who’s in your game today?” keeps the conversation open without sounding intrusive or like you’re trying to get them into trouble
By making online safety part of normal family conversations without it feeling like you're spying on them, your teen will hopefully be more likely to come to you if something feels uncomfortable or weird.
Is Roblox safe for teens?
The short answer: yes, with your guidance.
Roblox can be a safe and enjoyable space when combined with parental controls, maturity settings, content ratings, clear boundaries, and open communication.
You don’t have to ban the game if they are very set on playing (this avoids them doing it in secret too) but to help your teen learn how to navigate it responsibly – a skill that will carry over to all their online interactions.
