Quick summary

  • Panty liners are thin, single-use pads used for absorbing vaginal discharge and very light bleeding

  • Panty liners are not necessary and, as a parent, it's important to remind your teen that discharge is normal but they can use them if they prefer

If your tween or teen has started or is about to start their period, they might ask about panty liners as an option for managing discharge or light bleeding – as an FYI, if you are helping your teen prepare for their first period, you might find this first-period kit guide helpful.

Here’s a simple guide to help you understand what they are and when they might be useful.

What are panty liners?

A panty liner is similar to a period pad. It’s a thin pad with one sticky side that sticks to the inside of underwear.

Panty liners are much thinner than pads and don’t usually have wings that wrap around underwear.

What are they used for?

Panty liners are generally used to absorb discharge at times when your teen isn’t menstruating (bleeding).

Discharge is completely normal and helps keep the vagina clean, but panty liners can help keep underwear clean and free from stains.

They can also be used for very light bleeding or spotting, but they’re generally not suitable for heavier bleeding during a period unless paired with another product like a tampon or menstrual cup.

Panty liners are single use and disposable, and they’re easy to find in pharmacies, supermarkets, and corner shops.

Why might teens choose to use panty liners?

Panty liners are a popular choice for several reasons:

  • Discharge can sometimes stain underwear or make it look bleached because it’s acidic – panty liners catch the discharge, keeping underwear clean
  • They’re extremely easy to use and don’t require much thought
  • Many schools, healthcare centres, and educational facilities provide free panty liners, making them accessible

Why might teens avoid using panty liners?

Not all teens will feel panty liners are necessary. Some reasons include:

  • Panty liners aren’t essential – they’re entirely optional based on personal preference
  • Some, especially scented liners, can cause redness, irritation, or itching of the vulval skin
  • Buying another product can feel like an extra expense, especially if they’re already using other products
  • Being single-use, panty liners are not eco-friendly, which may concern some teens

What parents should know

Panty liners are a super simple option that can help keep underwear clean when your teen has discharge or light spotting.

However, it’s important to remind your teen that discharge is completely normal and panty liners aren’t necessary unless they feel more comfortable using them.

It’s all about their personal choice – using panty liners or nothing at all is entirely fine.
