If your teen has started or is about to start their period, you might hear them mention reusable pads.

These eco-friendly alternatives to disposable pads are gaining popularity, and understanding how they work can help you to help your teen decide if they’re the right choice.

What are reusable pads?

Reusable pads are similar to disposable pads but are made from reusable materials like fleece, microfibre, and bamboo fabrics.

They’re designed to absorb period blood and are worn inside underwear, just like disposable pads.

Reusable pads often come with a waterproof bag, allowing your teen to store used pads while out and about.

They need to be changed every 4-6 hours, just like disposable pads.

However, instead of throwing them away, reusable pads can be taken home in their storage bag and washed – in a washing machine or by hand.

These pads come in many sizes, colours, and patterns, so your teen can even choose ones that match their preferences or aesthetic.

Why might teens like reusable pads?

Reusable pads are becoming a favourite for many teens due to their benefits:

  • They’re generally softer, more absorbent, and more comfortable than disposable pads
  • They’re just as easy to use as disposable pads
  • They have a low infection risk when changed regularly and washed after each use

Why might teens avoid reusable pads?

While reusable pads work well for many, they’re not for everyone. Some reasons why teens might avoid them include:

  • Some people find them uncomfortable, especially if the pads start chafing, though this depends on personal preference
  • They require more care, needing to be hand or machine washed after each use
  • They can have a higher upfront cost, though this evens out over time compared to disposable products
  • They’re not as widely available as disposable pads and tampons yet
  • They can’t be used in water, so they aren’t suitable for swimming or baths. If your teen enjoys swimming, period swimwear, tampons, or menstrual cups might be a better option for those activities

What parents should know overall

Using reusable pads is a great way for planet-conscious teens to reduce their environmental impact while staying dry, clean, and comfortable all day.

These pads do require a little extra care, but can be a wonderful option for those who value sustainability.
